  1. HP-UX SNAplus3179G, Technical Data
  2.    For HP 9000 Series 300, 400, 700, and 800 Computer Systems
  3. Product Number J2236A, J2230A, J2224A
  4.    The HP-UX SNAplus3179G software product enables the HP 9000
  5. Series 300/400, 700 and 800 running the HP-UX operating system, and the
  6. X Windows System, to emulate an IBM 3179G/3192G color graphics display
  7. station.  SNAplus3179G allows interactive communications between an
  8. HP 9000 Series 300, 400, 700, and 800 and an IBM System/370 or
  9. compatible mainframe using SNA communications and 3270 data stream.

  13. The HP-UX SNAplus3179G can be configured as either stand-alone or
  14. client/server.  The standalone configuration provides IBM mainframe
  15. access for a single HP-UX computer which has its own HP-UX SNAplusLink.
  16. The client/server configuration permits access to the IBM mainframe from
  17. multiple HP-UX computers on an Ethernet or Token Ring LAN.  These
  18. computers generally use a single HP 9000 computer with an SNAplusLink as
  19. a server to access the IBM mainframe.
  20.    The HP-UX SNAplusLink provides the major features of an IBM 3274
  21. cluster control unit and the lower four levels of SNA.  Physical Unit
  22. Type 2 and Type 2.1 (PU2 and PU 2.1) are emulated, Logical Unit Types 0,
  23. 1, 2, 3, and 6.2 (LU0, LU1, LU2, LU3, LU6.2) are supported.  When used
  24. with HP-UX SNAplusLink, SNAplus3179G allows access to the Graphical Data
  25. Display Manager (GDDM) and 3270 applications on the mainframe, such as
  26. TSO and CMS.

  29. The HP 9000 Series 300, 400, 700, and 800 with SNAplus3179G supports
  30. host interactive color graphics on IBM System/370 or compatible
  31. mainframes, by emulating a subset of the features of an IBM 3179G color
  32. graphics display station.  The SNAplus3179G product supports the
  33. following features:
  34. o Alphanumeric/APL keyboard HP-UX X11 Window system support allows the
  35.   user to create, move, shuffle, iconify, or refresh windows; the window
  36.   manager allows the execution of several HP-UX SNAplus3179G
  37.   applications in a multitasking mode; the graphics, color, and special
  38.   effects of the IBM 3179G applications are maintained while executing
  39.   SNAplus3179G in the X Window System
  40. o High-quality color vector graphics
  41. o Seven colors (red, blue, green, yellow, pink, white and turquoise)
  42.   plus black background
  43. o Bit-mapped display with 24 and 32 line support
  44. o Program symbol support:  PSA, PSB, and ISS 1-4
  45. o Three window sizes:
  46.   - 512 x 720 pixels
  47.   - 672 x 960 pixels
  48.   - 320 x 480 pixels (height x width)
  49. o Two screen formats:
  50.   - 1920 characters
  51.   - 2560 characters
  52. o Efficient screen handling routines provide a very responsive and
  53.   low-overhead user interface
  54. o Adjustment for aspect ratio difference.
  55. o A graphic cross-hair cursor with pixel-level resolution.
  56. o Vector-to-raster graphics, Program Symbol Graphics (PSA and PSB only)
  57.   and Triple plane image symbol sets
  58. o A mouse can be used to control the position of the graphic cursor.

  64. Functional Specifications
  65. When SNAplusLink and SNAplus3179G are used together, the SNAplusLink
  66. emulates an IBM 3274 model 51C cluster controller, and SNAplus3179G
  67. emulates a 3179G Model G1 or G2 display.
  68.    Local screen print is available with SNAplus3179G through the
  69. functionality of X Windows.  All printers supported by X Windows are
  70. supported by SNAplus3179G.
  71.    SNAplus3179G allows communications with an IBM 370 or compatible
  72. mainframe running VM, VM/XA, MVS/SP, MVS/XA, or MVS/ESA operating
  73. systems and ACF/VTAM through an IBM 3705, 3725 or 3745 communications
  74. controller running ACF/NCP.

  76. Features Not Supported
  77. PCFile transfer capability is not included with SNAplus3179G.  For file
  78. transfer, either SNAplus3270 or SNAplusRJE in a separate X Window, can
  79. be used in conjunction with SNAPlus3179G.
  80.    The following major features of an IBM 3179G color display station
  81. are not implemented by SNAplus3179G:
  82. o Response time monitor function.
  83. o Attached plotter
  84. o Fields or characters with the blinking attribute
  85. o Operator selection of:
  86.   - Alternate alpha and graphic cursor type
  87.   - Graphic/alpha cursor select using +Cr key
  88.   - Cursor blink, keyboard click, numeric lock, audible alarm volume
  89. o Alpha cursor movement using a mouse
  90. o Accelerated or diagonal cursor movement
  91. o Cursor position display
  92. o Keyboard entry assist
  93. o Cancel screen copy in progress
  94. o Basic assurance test
  95. o Offline test

  124. Customer Installation Responsibility
  125. Installation of these products requires knowledge in several overlapping
  126. areas.  The staff engineer responsible for this task must have strong
  127. knowledge of (or have direct contact with staff with strong knowledge
  128. of):  SNA networks, application environments, HP-UX system
  129. administration, and X-window setup.
  130.    Installation requires basic SNA knowledge.  This includes knowledge
  131. of interface nodes, network routers, NAUs, PUs, LUs, link types, IBM
  132. hardware and software.
  133.    The installer must understand why the SNAplus products are being
  134. installed, how the users are going to use SNAplus and how SNAplus fits
  135. into the network solution.
  136.    Installation of SNAplus requires a thorough user-level knowledge of
  137. HP-UX commands.  In addition, the installer must be familiar with:
  138.   - running update on an HP-UX system
  139.   - running SAM (in order to add users)
  140.   - the HP-UX file system, privilege groups, and real-time features
  141.   - running LAN and PSI diagnostics on an HP-UX system
  142.   - HP-UX kernel configuration

  144. Customers who cannot compose a team with this skill set should purchase
  145. HP Installation and Network Startup services.

  147. Additional Implementation Assistance
  148. For implementation needs that go beyond installation, the customer can
  149. either provide self-support, or can purchase additional services from
  150. HP.  These services include Network Startup and HP ConsultLine.  In
  151. addition, the customer can also purchase service from HP on a
  152. time-and-materials basis.

  154.    Network Startup includes implementation scheduling and coordination
  155. assistance, network configuration and verification testing, and network
  156. documentation.

  158. Ordering Information
  159. HP-UX SNAplus3179G includes right-to-use license and software.  For
  160. Series 300, 400, and 700, customer must specify software version option
  161. and a media option, and for the Series 800, a processor option.
  162.    HP-UX SNAplus3179G requires HP STREAMS/UX for Series 300, 400, 700,
  163. and 800 running HP-UX 9.0.

  196. HP-UX SNAplus3179G requires previous installation of HP-UX SNAplusLink
  197. (J2220A or J2226A) either on the stand-alone or on the server system.
  198.    The software which the customer orders contains both the stand-alone
  199. and client/server configuration software.  During installation, the
  200. customer chooses which configuration is required.
  201.    Upgrade options are available for Series 800 SNAplus products.

  203. Note:  A copy of HP-UX SNAplus3179G must be ordered for each HP-UX
  204. system which is to communicate with the IBM mainframe through the
  205. server.
